Steamboat Springs 101st Winter Carnival Feb. 5-9
Posted on November 30, 2013
You won’t find Steamboat Springs short on traditions, family or otherwise, and the upcoming 2014 Winter Carnival, celebrating its 101st anniversary, is no exception. Every winter since 1913, folks in Steamboat set aside one week in February for celebrating all the good things this small, remote Colorado Western town has to offer: snow, cold temps, cowboys, kids, oh, and skiers too! In fact it’s the skiing community via the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) that has planned and organized this time honored tradition from the beginning.
Closing off the main street, filling it with snow, kids, ski jumps, cowboys and cowgirls on horseback is the first order of the day once the festivities begin. Other events include ski jumping competitions, the Diamond Hitch Parade which includes the High School band on skis, and the Nighttime Extravaganza at Howelsen Hill with a brilliant fireworks display and the famous Lighted Man on skis. This year’s celebration is shaping up to be an extra special community centered event with details soon to follow….stay tuned for updates and begin planning your winter vacation now.
